What is a reaction sintered silicon carbide rod?
Reaction sintered silicon carbide rods are made by reacting silicon powder with carbon at high temperature to generate low-temperature β-SiC, and combining the original silicon carbide particles.
Reaction-sintered silicon carbide products have been used in high-temperature industrial furnaces, power plant desulfurization systems, mining and mineral processing, cement manufacturing, metal heat treatment, galvanizing and aluminum plating, waste incineration, petrochemical machinery, surface treatment, seals, heat exchange and solar energy industries. In the future, components made of reaction-sintered silicon carbide will be increasingly used in the material industry fields of ultra-high temperature, thermal shock, wear and high corrosion.

Production process of reaction sintered silicon carbide rods
1. Preparation stage of green bodies
Mixed raw materials
Mix the carbon source and silicon carbide powder, which is the first step in making the green bodies of reaction-sintered silicon carbide rods. Factors such as the mixing ratio and the quality of the raw materials will affect the performance and quality of the subsequent green bodies.
Molding operation
The green bodies can be prepared from the mixed raw materials by slip injection molding, dry pressing or cold isostatic pressing. Different molding methods are suitable for different production needs and product shape requirements. For example, slip injection molding is suitable for making green bodies with complex shapes, while dry pressing molding is relatively suitable for green bodies with simple shapes and high efficiency. Cold isostatic pressing is more commonly used in the preparation of some green bodies with high density and uniformity requirements.

2. Siliconization reaction stage
Heating the green body
The green body is heated to above 1500℃ under vacuum or inert atmosphere. This high temperature environment is to melt solid silicon into liquid silicon so that the subsequent siliconization reaction can proceed smoothly. At the same time, adverse reactions such as oxidation of the green body and silicon at high temperatures can be avoided under vacuum or inert atmosphere.
Siliconization reaction
A chemical reaction occurs between liquid silicon or silicon vapor and C in the green body. The in-situ generated β-SiC combines with the original SiC particles in the green body to eventually form a reaction-sintered silicon carbide ceramic material. Through this reaction, the structure and performance of the green body are further optimized to form the properties and microstructure required for silicon carbide rods.
