Classification of industrial kilns

Jan 03, 2025

Industrial furnaces can be roughly divided into 10 categories:

1. Ironmaking and steelmaking furnaces

  • Blast furnaces and blast furnace iron-making yards: mainly used for smelting and preparing steel.
  • Steelmaking furnaces, mixed iron furnaces (cars): used in the steelmaking process.
  • Ferroalloy smelting furnaces: including electric arc furnaces, open arc furnaces, etc., used for smelting ferroalloys.

2. Melting furnaces

  • Cupolas, iron-making furnaces: used for various cold-air and hot-air cupolas and various iron-making furnaces for casting.
  • Metal melting furnaces: including copper-smelting furnaces, lead-making furnaces, aluminum-melting furnaces, etc.
  • Non-metal melting and smelting furnaces: such as glass melting furnaces, corundum smelting furnaces, silicon smelting furnaces, etc.

3. Sintering furnaces

  • Sintering machines (head and tail): used for heating and bonding ore powder and iron powder into blocks.
  • Pelletizing shaft furnaces and belt pelletizing: used for pellet production.

4. Heating furnace

  • Metal rolling and forging heating furnace: including billet heating furnace, soaking furnace, forging heating furnace, etc.
  • Non-metal heating furnace: such as asphalt heating furnace, glass molding furnace, etc.

5. Heat treatment furnace

  • Metal heat treatment furnace: including annealing furnace, tempering furnace (quenching, tempering), horse furnace, etc.
  • Non-metal heat treatment furnace: used to remove moisture or volatiles contained in materials.

6. Drying furnace, kiln

  • Drying furnace (kiln) for metal and non-metal processing: used to remove moisture or volatiles from materials.

7. Non-metal baking (forging) furnace, refractory kiln

  • Rotary kiln, vertical kiln, etc.: used for non-metal baking and production of refractory materials.

8. Lime kiln (lime kiln)

  • Various vertical kilns and earth kilns for producing lime: used for lime production.

9. Ceramic, enamel, brick and tile kilns

  • Used in the production of ceramics, enamel, brick and tile.

10. Other furnaces

  • Gas generators, gasifiers, etc.: and other industrial furnaces not included in the above categories.

The above classification covers the main types of industrial furnaces, each type of furnace has its specific application areas and functions.
