Where to Use Expanded Clay Aggregate: 5 Key Application Areas

Jun 12, 2025

Expanded Clay Aggregate (ECA) is a lightweight and porous artificial aggregate made by expanding clay at high temperature. It has the characteristics of low density, high strength, thermal insulation, sound absorption, and water permeability. The following is a detailed description of its five major application scenarios:

Green roofs and roof gardens

Expanded clay aggregates are widely used as drainage layers and lightweight filling materials in green roof systems. Its porous structure can effectively drain water, prevent water accumulation from causing plant root rot, and reduce roof load.

Compared with traditional crushed stone, clay balls are 30%-50% lighter and suitable for buildings with limited load-bearing capacity. In addition, its water retention can regulate soil moisture and reduce irrigation frequency.

Water treatment and artificial wetlands

In sewage treatment and artificial wetland projects, expanded clay balls are used as biofilters to filter and purify water. Its high specific surface area (about 300-500 m²/m³) provides attachment space for microorganisms, promotes organic matter degradation, and nitrogen and phosphorus removal.

ECA filter media is used in many ecological wetland projects in Europe. Its treatment efficiency is more than 20% higher than that of traditional sand filtration, and it is not easy to harden and has a service life of more than 10 years. The chemical inertness of expanded clay aggregate avoids the risk of heavy metal dissolution, making it suitable for the restoration of sensitive water bodies.

Expanded Clay Aggregate

Lightweight concrete and building insulation

They can replace some natural aggregates to prepare lightweight concrete with a density of only 800-1800 kg/m³ (ordinary concrete is 2400 kg/m³), which significantly reduces the deadweight of the structure and is suitable for high-rise buildings, bridge weight reduction, and prefabricated components. Expanded clay aggregate concrete is also fire-resistant and does not release harmful gases at high temperatures, meeting the requirements of green building certification (such as LEED).

Horticulture and soilless cultivation

In the field of horticulture, ECA is an ideal soilless cultivation substrate (such as the Dutch barrel system). Its sterile and pest-free properties prevent soil-borne diseases, and its pH is neutral (6.5-7.5), which is suitable for the growth of most plants.

The porosity of ECA (about 70%) ensures that the roots can breathe while retaining moisture through capillary action and reducing the frequency of fertilization. They can be cleaned and reused repeatedly, reducing long-term costs.

Sports venues and permeable paving

ECA is used in the construction of the base of sports venues such as football fields and golf courses to enhance drainage performance and prevent water accumulation.

Its water permeability rate is 10-15 cm/s, far exceeding ordinary sand and gravel, and it can cope with heavy rain weather. The football field uses the ECA+turf system, which can be quickly restored to use even after continuous rainfall. Pavements paved with ECA can reduce urban waterlogging and achieve the goal of a sponge city with a rainwater recycling system.

Expanded clay balls have shown irreplaceable value in the fields of construction, environmental protection, agriculture, etc., with their environmental protection, multi-functionality, and engineering adaptability. In the future, as the demand for sustainable development grows, its application scenarios will be further expanded to emerging fields such as soil improvement and sound barrier engineering.
